Entrepreneurship Lessons From My Home

Just another day of my mom spitting entrepreneurial facts.

Riya Asrani

If you smile every time you see my name pop up on the internet, I love you. If you’re baffled at how I continue to put myself out there—well, bestie, I’ve been asking myself the same thing. Regardless, I wanted to leave you with something invaluable. Something so precious that my mum just weaved into my life casually.

Here are three lessons I swear by while trying to build my business (from my mother’s brain, delivered to yours):

  1. Lead with empathy: That woman is the epitome of patience, kindness, and gentleness. It comes so naturally to her. She’s always just like, “If you can’t be empathetic, then what are you?” I don’t know, Mum, we shall have this existential crisis sometime later

  2. Be willing to change: She heard ‘pivot’ and really made her whole damn thing. She had her daycare/tutoring thing; she can sew, knit, and crochet; she took care of us and the family, and to this day, continues to learn new things

  3. Always have a safety fund(s): This person has a safety fund for her safety fund. Even though she approaches everything with complete determination, she’s not afraid of failure. And she does it smartly! Please, imma cry

Basically, treat your business like your baby, and you’ll be just faaaine. Everything I am (and will be) is because of her. All I’m trying to say is: let your dreams run wild, okay?
