Why is Inspiration So Elusive?

Stuck in a copywriting rut? Let's talk inspiration, creativity, and being absolutely relentless in its pursuit.

Re: My inner monologue: Imagine a tired Ri mumbling, “I’m unworthy, my writing is shit, and I’m clearly just not good enough for this freelance stuff.”

Readers, she has 4 blogs to write. And a newsletter. She clearly is good enough for this freelance stuff.

Okay, you must be wondering, “Why the heck should I care?” Well, because this post is about finding inspiration. If you’re anything like me, you’re also waiting for it to strike at the right time.

After watching 108 videos about what I needed to do correctly, starting to read a non-fiction self-help/creative book, and even disengaging from everything, I realised enough was enough. My patience was running thin (despite my partner’s kind and gentle words—they’re the best). I decided to take matters into my own hands, slams my fists on the table.

Before we jump into what happened, here’s what I needed to drill into my brain (or like low-key acknowledge while rolling my eyes):

  • I’m looking at this all wrong

  • I need to take a fucking chill pill. There’s bigger fish to fry

  • Bub, this is just life. You’ll figure it out (it’s not like you have a choice anyway)

Sorry people, I have ADHD, stick with me here. Okay, now that we have that out of the way, inspiration and who the fuck does she think she is? Actually, she’s quite nice once you stop acting like the world is ending and this is your last chance to put something out into the world. Just a single text inspired me to write this post. A very simple question I asked my loveliest friend, Pri.

The response blew me away:

Did I just inspire someone to be fearless? This is a joke, right? I don’t know if it is. Nonetheless, it made me write this post. We try so hard to make everything we do perfect. You read, reread, tweak, edit, and just basically die on the keyboard. But what if we just tried to embrace the messy bits? Neurodivergent people, I’m looking specifically at you. It is a delight that you exist. If you need just one person to read what you wrote, I’ll do it. But we cannot let this capitalistic machine kill us. We need to create until we drift gently into slumberland.

What I’m trying to say in this realllyyy long and dramatic post is simply: Inspiration is everywhere. It’s in silly questions like these, that Taylor Swift song you’re so obsessed with, or even that horrid breakup text your ex sent you (totes not inspired by personal events).

You just need to try and ask the right questions. Heck, you just need to ask questions. The silliest, goofiest, nicest ones. Who knows when inspiration will creep up behind you?

So, what’s your question going to be?
